God Hears the Cries of the Poor
As Amos contends, God hears the cries of the poor, and God’s voice speaking through their pain challenges all of us, but most especially those wielding power and enjoying prosperity, to listen to God’s messages spoken through the voices of the voiceless, homeless, evicted, malnourished, desperate, and hopeless, whether in Appalachian coal country, inner-city Chicago, or a campsite for unhoused people in Los Angeles. Hearing their voices requires a response, and responding necessitates political, economic, and personal sacrifice, and the willingness to let go of power and privilege so that others can simply survive.
