Energion Publications to Release a New Edition of Why Four Gospels?

After nearly a year out of print, Energion Publications will release the second edition of Dr. David Alan Black’s important book, Why Four Gospels?. The book will be released on October 15, 2010 and will be available through major online retailers as well as via Ingrams for distribution to local bookstores.

In Why Four Gospels? Dr. Black traces the history, origin, and development of the four NT gospels and challenges the dominant view that Mark was written first and then used by Matthew and Luke in the composition of their gospels. While he relies on both internal and external evidence, Dr. Black places special emphasis on giving due weight to the testimony of the early church fathers.

But this book is not just about which gospel was written first. Dr. Black looks at the historical situation that produced each gospel, and affirms the apostolicity and reliability of the canonical gospel accounts. One reviewer of the first edition commented that “not the least of the useful things Black has done is to give many ancient Christian writers renewed voice in the ongoing debate.”

If you are interested in current debates about the historical Jesus and the reliability of the gospel record, you owe it to yourself to read this book.

Why Four Gospels? is approximately 120 pages in length, including front matter and includes an extensive bibliography.

David Alan Black holds a doctorate in theology from the University of Basel in Switzerland and has taught New Testament and Greek for over 30 years. He is also the editor of the popular website, Dave Black Online. His published books include The Myth of Adolescence, Interpreting the New Testament, It’s Still Greek to Me, and The Jesus Paradigm. He and his wife live on a 123-acre working farm in southern Virginia and are self-supporting missionaries to Ethiopia, which they visit twice each year.
